Footprints in the Sand (The Real Life Version!)

“One night I dreamed of walking along the beach with the Lord.

Many scenes from my life flashed across the sky.

In each scene I noticed footprints in the sand.

Sometimes there were two sets of footprints,

other times there were one set of footprints.

This bothered me because I noticed

that during the low periods of my life,

when I was suffering from

anguish, sorrow or defeat,

I could see only one set of footprints.

So I said to the Lord,

“You promised me Lord,

that if I followed you,

You would walk with me always.

But I have noticed that during

the most trying periods of my life

there has only been one

set of footprints in the sand.

Why, when I needed you most,

You have not been there for me?”

The Lord replied,

“Yeah, sorry about that. I would have

loved to have picked you up and given you

huggles, but I’m kind of attempting

to make a champion out of you.

If I keep putting you on my shoulders

Like that ‘Footprints in the Sand’ stuff,

you’ll never grow past being a child.

My aim is to make you a world beater,

a Goliath slayer and a real History Maker.

Get it?

So would it be alright if you stopped

complaining and took it all on the chin …

Thanks.”

  1. @ Justin Widdop
Use anything you like as long as you mention me… only kidding! Use anything as long as you pray for me regularly. Keep up the good work!

    @ Chris Denham
Yeah. My version of Footprints is definitely closer to the truth than the fluffy version. Keep up the good work Chris. You’re a great preacher and a great pastor too!

  5. I found the ‘buttprints’ version someone mentioned but can’t find the ‘starfish and the jcb’ story. Does anyone have a link?

  6. Spiritual maturity might allow some leverage(tongue-in-cheek)here! After the smile, I must say that my concern is for the spiritual babes, and those whose faith may be somewhat weak, that they may not be caused to stumble. God wants and deserves spiritual, confident service, and believers cannot be weaklings, but there are so many promises of His equipping, carrying, bearing, leading, that it’s a bit of anathema to God to be unhelpful and uncouth. Wasn’t it He who said, ‘Fear not, for I have redeemed thee? When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee—-neither shall the flame kindle on thee?’ Isa 43: 1 & 2

  7. Love Daves stuff, hes on the ball and ready to get up the nose of the religious types, Bit worried for the sensitive and needy who might read this material……NOT!

  8. I love this version.

Someone once said to me that Christians are like rulers (the things with markings down the side to tell you how big something is). Remember when you were at school and used to try and bend your ruler to see how far it would go without breaking?

Some Christians are like metal rulers, some like wooden rulers, some like plastic rulers and some like tape measures. Now, I’ve not done an experiment on what happens to them all so I can’t tell you who is what Christian but what I do know is they all do different things when you try to bend them, some will bend really well and flip back into shape, some won’t move, some will hold the new shape, I’m trained in fashion design and I’ve had times when I’ve been bored and twiddled the tape measure, twisting it, tying knots in it, folding it etc and I know that whatever I do it will hold it’s shape when I’ve finished playing with it and I can go back to measuring a body or the pattern I’m drawing with it.

When bad things happen we’re like rulers, God knows how far we can stretch and bend. He knows if we’ll snap or spring back or like a tape measure that can be tied in knots but then go back to shape.

I’m not suggesting that God sends bad things, I don’t know the answer, but I think it works together with this version of Footprints. God knows how much of the strain He needs to take and how much we can take ourselves. I don’t believe God ever allows us to be pushed past the point He knows we’d break.

  9. this is in regards to your tweets about rob bell. i agree with your points on the doctrine rob bell is teaching. However what bemuses me is how hope city church is different from his ministry? i have been to hope city a few times and think its a lovely place you always feel good about yourself or positive about the world once you leave hope city. but its more like life coaching than it it is preaching the gospel. alot of the times i was there i would recieve no bible verses at all in the message. Its one of those places where you go if you need to feel you belong and be surrounded by “nice” people. which, don’t get me wrong is a lovely little cute community. However hopecity doees not teach you about sin or hell or other important scripture. very much similar to rob bell.

  10. Hi Hanisha,
Thanks for your comments. Our aim has never been to make people feel good but to make people feel that God is for them but not against them. I trust that is what gives you the good feeling.
Secondly, every message is a fight against sin which is the principal retardant to the work of Christ within us and around us.
There’s not one weekend that goes by without the old nature being sent back to the cross through repentance and turning toward the life of Christ.
    Thanks for your comments,
    DAVE
